If you’ve ever paused and wondered, “What’s the deal with these cute, round, stuffed pastry creatures in Clannad?” you’re not alone. The ‘Dango Daikazoku’ or ‘Big Dango Family’ serves as a prevalent motif throughout Clannad, a critically acclaimed anime series. At one point, Nagisa describes how dango are often sold stuck together on a skewer in groups of three or five. Just as the colorful dumplings complement each other, Nagisa says families should support and stick together.

If the city has a heart and mind like people do, and if it’s trying to make the people living in it as happy as possible, then a miracle like this could be something the city accomplished. But that’s not exactly a miracle, right? The people who love the city live there, and the city that loves people will love the people. We love the city and are being nurtured by it. The “dango family” motif also emerges in the show’s tender opening theme song. The lyrics compare the experience of watching a child grow up to a parent’s love for their dango children.
