Larian Studios will begin winding down its support for Baldur’s Gate 3 after the release of official modding tools in a future patch.

As you may know, Larian Studios is moving on from Baldur’s Gate 3 and the Dungeons & Dragons license to pursue a new original project. The studio has previously revealed it is working on two new games, and from the sounds of it, Larian isn’t going to be adapting anyone else’s work or IP.

At a BAFTA event following Larian’s multiple wins at the award show, Vincke revealed that he sees the release of modding tools as a ‘handover’ moment to the player base (thanks, Eurogamer).

End Of An Era

He clarified that they won’t be abandoning the game completely, just that “you will see the level of support diminished to really critical bug fixes.” When asked if he was looking forward to this moment, Vincke affirmed he was excited about new projects.

“We’re working on our new thing, we’re super excited about the new games,” Vincke said. “We’re creative spirits also, we don’t want to keep doing the same thing, we really want to move forward and do new things.”

We might see these ‘new things’ earlier than you’d expect because Vincke wholeheartedly believes in the early access process and the part it played in making Baldur’s Gate 3 so successful.

“There were mistakes that we were making and players were telling us, ‘this is a mistake, you shouldn’t be doing this'”, he explained. “We try and listen and do as much as we can, where we think it makes a lot of sense. So that I think was instrumental in BG3’s success.”

However, he does believe that four years of early access was a bit too long as there’s potential for players to become bored with the product.

Patch 7, Baldur’s Gate 3’s modding patch, is planned to be released in September.
