Cities: Skylines 2 has a serious update on the horizon that will impact players’ previous saves and the Economy 2.0 patch is said to be one of the biggest updates yet. Metropolises everywhere will be getting a visit from the Grim Reaper as part of a severe death wave, but Paradox Interactive has prepared players ahead of time.

The popular city-building game was released last year as a sequel to the 2015 predecessor of the same name, and we gave the sequel a 9 out of 10 score in our review that praised its improved AI traffic, easy-to-play user interface for newcomers, and its overall scope and expanse to serve as a playground.

Cities: Skylines 2 Economy Patch Threatens Previous Saves And The Elderly

Ahead of the Economy 2.0 patch’s release, Paradox published two Developer Diaries with in-depth details on the update and also laid out a checklist to follow when loading the new patch that will serve as a handy guide for trepidatious players. Saves, mods, the dreaded death wave, and the length of time these changes will take to affect gameplay were all discussed.

It was clarified that the death wave would last around “1-2 in-game months” and target the elderly, saying “The older your citizens are, the more severe it will be.” Going after this age range allows the devs to “vary the age when citizens can die much more to avoid future death waves” and it was confirmed that this can only take effect once the Grim Reaper has finished its sweep of the city.

As daunting as the death wave sounds, it’s beneficial for players in the long run because it will keep the Grim Repear’s appetite at bay. However, the blog post’s purpose was to prepare players for the mass deaths in tow upon launching a past save with the new update.

Additionally, city builders should also expect to see a negative money trend initially – where taxes may need to be increased – an adjustment period for companies’ production and employee numbers, quick demand adjustments, new residential density, and new rent and resource consumption calculations.

Unfortunately, the Economy patch was thought to arrive on June 19, however, the game’s official X page confirmed that this target would not be met. More information is said to be shared today (June 20) and it’s advised to follow Cities: Skylines on social media for more updates.
