How to Ensure Reliability in Rigid Flex Board Assemblies

Reliability in Rigid Flex Board

Rigid PCBs are a vital component in electronic devices, but they have a number of limitations that limit their application. For example, they require a specific space and shape to accommodate them in the device, are fragile and can break easily, and have limited flexibility. By integrating rigid and flexible sections into one unit, rigid flex boards can overcome many of these issues and offer superior performance for long-lasting electronic devices.

Rigid-flex circuits must be able to withstand significant bending and flexing without mechanical failure. This requires careful design and material selection to ensure the rigid portions can withstand the stress of folding or bending, as well as adequate tolerances to avoid damage to the flexible sections.

This is especially challenging when combining a mix of rigid flex board components, as the different materials may have different stress tolerances. To address this issue, designers must carefully consider the layer stack and material choice for both the rigid and flexible sections to maximize reliability.

How to Ensure Reliability in Rigid Flex Board Assemblies

Rigid flex circuits can benefit from their integrated rigid and flexible sections by reducing impedance mismatches, which can lead to signal loss and instability. Additionally, the rigid-flex circuits can reduce noise and electromagnetic interference (EMI), which can disrupt or interfere with signal transmission.

Rigid-flex circuits use copper as their primary conductor material because it is durable, highly workable, and conductive. Copper can be rolled or electro-deposited into different thicknesses, sizes, and weights to meet the requirements of each design. Manufacturers also apply surface treatment to enhance copper foil longevity and improve adhesion, strength, and corrosion protection.

A rigid flex circuit design is complex because of the need to route traces through both the rigid and flexible sections. The flexible portions can be subjected to stress due to flexing, so it is crucial to maintain proper spacing between the traces to prevent short circuits and other problems. To do this, designers must account for trace width transitions, neckdowns, and a safety margin to ensure that the traces do not contact the edges of the rigid components.

Rigid flex boards are more complex to manufacture than traditional rigid PCBs, so they must be carefully designed for manufacturability. This involves evaluating the manufacturing capabilities of the fabricator and working closely with them throughout the design process. Additionally, rigorous testing and inspection processes are required to identify manufacturing defects and ensure that rigid-flex PCBs will perform as intended in end-use conditions.

Integrated rigid-flex PCBs can help manufacturers produce more reliable, longer-lasting electronic devices by eliminating common sources of failure such as loose connections and solder joints. Rigid-flex circuits can withstand harsh environmental factors, including moisture and temperature variations, which can cause other types of PCB failure. Additionally, they can eliminate the need for wire harnesses and reduce overall assembly costs by integrating multiple circuits into a single structure. This can significantly decrease the size of an electronic device and increase its durability.
