Microsoft is cutting approximately 3% of its global workforce, over 6,800 roles, as part of a broad restructuring initiative. With a headcount of 228,000 as of June, this marks the company’s most significant round of layoffs since it eliminated 10,000 positions in 2023.
According to CNBC, the layoffs are not performance-related. A Microsoft spokesperson said the move is part of an organizational reshaping strategy: “We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace.”
The job cuts span all levels, teams, and geographies, reflecting a company-wide shift. While Microsoft has not specified which roles are being eliminated, it emphasized the need to remain agile and competitive amid rapid changes driven by AI, cloud technologies, and evolving customer demands.
This announcement follows a broader trend of tech-sector layoffs. Just last week, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike said it would reduce its workforce by 5%, highlighting how even profitable tech firms are recalibrating headcount in response to shifting market dynamics.
Despite the layoffs, Microsoft remains financially robust, having reported $25.8 billion in net income for the quarter ending April—beating analyst estimates. The restructuring aims to streamline operations and flatten management layers, mirroring recent efforts by peers like Amazon.
