The showcase included a deeper look into Skyblivion’s world, particularly Oblivion‘s town of Chorrol, and some questing.
The dev team, headed by Rebelzize, used Skyrim‘s 13-year-old engine to give Oblivion a facelift—a much-needed improvement since graphics aren’t Oblivion’s strong suit.
As the player character explores the world, the game’s vibrant colors, nostalgic lighting, and atmosphere make for a familiar but enhanced return to Cyrodiil 18 years after Oblivion’s release.
In the two minor quests shown, “Fingers of the Mountain” and “The Killing Field,” it’s clear how intricate the overhaul is, as every outcome for the small quests is remade. Seeing Oblivion’s quests in Skyrim‘s engine really questions the latter’s RPG chops.
Despite being technically impressive, the showcase still featured a few classic Bethesda hiccups for eagle-eyed gamers to catch.
An entirely volunteer-based project, the mod boasts “Every armor, weapon, interactable, and clutter item from Oblivion remastered and updated true to Elder Scrolls lore.” The short, if it was in Oblivion, it’s here, plus more for players going for their hundredth playthrough.
Skyblivion currently doesn’t have a specific release date, but the base game is expected sometime in 2025, with DLC remasters planned afterward.
Skyblivion has been in development for many years, with a direct port project starting in 2012 and a remaster in 2016. During that time, multiple overhaul mods werereleased that pushed the limits of Bethesda games as full-on engines.
From Skyrim‘s Falskaar and Moonpath to Elsweyr, to Fallout: New Vegas‘ infamous The Frontier and, most recently, Fallout 4‘s Fallout: London, modders have taken these games to new heights with every new release.
