It’s almost time to rip and tear guts in the past, as id Software has revealed that Doom: The Dark Ages is launching this summer on multiple platforms.
Doom: The Dark Ages is an upcoming prequel to the revived Doom series that began in 2016. Nearly a decade later, fans will finally learn the origins of the Doom Slayer, as he carves his way through a techno-medieval landscape.

The developers of Doom: The Dark Age revealed to DualShockers ahead of the Xbox Developer Direct that the game is launching on May 15, 2025. It will be released on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with a day-one appearance on Game Pass.

DualShockers was also made privy to an extended preview of the game, outlining some of the significant changes to the combat system from Doom Eternal. Notably, the Doom Slayer is less acrobat this time around, but the fights are more grounded, with a stronger protagonist able to soak the bullets of enemies.
The new trailer also showed off more of the vehicles in the game. There’s a giant mech, known as the Atlan, which is used for Kaiju-style levels, while players have more freedom flying the cybernetic dragon around various stages, in a manner reminiscent of the old Panzer Dragoon games (except not on rails.)

Notably, Doom: The Dark Ages hasn’t been announced for the Nintendo Switch, despite the previous two entries and the numerous Doom remasters all making the jump. Chances are, a Doom: The Dark Ages port is being saved for the Nintendo Switch 2, and will be revealed once more is known about that system.
Doom: The Dark Ages looks like it shakes up the formula in a way that will be pleasing to those disappointed with the overly complicated mechanics of Doom Eternal. More importantly, it’s coming out in a few months, so it won’t be long before fans are blowing demons heads off with impunity.
